A thought for Lent:
I have recently come across the ipsissima verba of Jesus’ prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, as they were passed on to Lenin:
Away, away! Let this cup of revolutionary-democratic dictatorship pass from me! (Collected Works, vol. 8, p. 288).
There you have it: the revolutionary dictatorship of the proletariat is actually a christological doctrine.

I had a thought about Gethsemane the other day. Someone mentioned the incident in which Jesus slept in the boat during the storm, leaving the disciples alone and frightened, and it reminded me of when the disciples slept in the garden while Jesus underwent his personal storm, so I thought it a little churlish of him to chide them for what he had indeed done. And what’s more, when they woke up (in the garden) and tried to still the storm (of the centurions), Jesus rebuked Peter and told him to put his sword away. Double standard?

Very nice! You should be preaching at the cathedral instead of that turgid bishop.

I’m sure you have more interesting worship services to espie than the local cathedral Eucharist. Spiritualists, anyone?
