A by-product of my research for ‘Orientalist Camp’ and the work of Allen Edwardes, I have had to romp my way through The Perfumed Garden, a book of Arab erotology by a certain Sheik Nefzaoui. The good sheik, after outlining eleven basic positions for coitus, goes on to elaborate on a few more:

‘Amongst those manners are the following called:

1. El asemeud, the stopperage.

2. El modefedâ, frog fashion.

3. El mokefâ, with the toes cramped.

4. El mokeurmeutt, with the legs in the air.

5. El setouri, he-goat fashion.

6. El loulabi, the screw of Archimedes.

9. El kelouci, the summerset.

10. Hachou el nekanok, the tail of the ostrich.

11. Lebeuss el djoureb, fitting on of the sock.

12. Kecheuf el astine, reciprocal sight of the posteriors.

13. Nezâ el kouss, the bend of the arch.

14. Nesedj el kheuss, the alternate movement of piercing.

15. Dok el arz, pounding on the spot.

16. Nik el kohoul, coitus from the back.

18. El kebachi, ram fashion.

20. Dok el outed, driving the pin in.

23. Tred ech chate, sheep fashion.

24. Kaleb el miche, inversion in coition.

26, El modakheli, the fitter-in.
