… for I have lost any sense of humour, pleasure in life, or hope for the future. I swim in ice cold sea water to stay alert, and I am up to page 300, with 402 pages to go in this infernal task. But I do think one of the great signs of an intelligent mind being responsible for creating the universe is as follows. This intelligent mind made sure that a) there are plenty of substances that may be converted into drugs, and b) there is a species inventive enough to figure out how to convert those substances into aforesaid drugs.

Oh yes, it is in full usage, but the changes are far more comprehensive. Originally I followed the format: recent date of publication [original date of publication]. Simple enough, although about 400 items were published in 1975 alone … However, the original date of publication is not always close to the date of composition (sometimes the first publication is 1913 or 1929 or 1955 etc). So, in a moment of pure bastardry, the unnamed ed said I should use the date of composition as the primary date, add letters after the date where necessary (always necessary, since sometimes Marx and Engels wrote 50 or items a year – separately), and then the most recent date of publication. It’s also a sign of an intelligent creator that these drugs give enough of a high to alert sapiential species to the Idea of pleasure, and just enough of a hangover to remind us that they are imperfect tokens and signs of the Real Pleasure they point us toward. If you believed such a thing.
